Why MiOsearch?

Windows XP has a search tool that comes with the OS. The search tool that you find here is a reaction to that. I found out the hard way that the search tool in XP only searches files having file extensions known to the OS. I had a few hundred files of a file extension unknown to XP where I wanted to search for different strings and sometimes do replacements. So I wrote MiOsearch. Version 1.0 only searches, while version 2.0 also allows you to do replacements. I provide both here, each in two variants, namely a Swedish and an English variant as Windows executables. Finally, I also provide the source code, which is Niceware. I have tried this on a handful computers, both running XP and two flavours of Linux, namely CentOS and Ubuntu. Since I wrote this tool as a reaction to the search tool in XP, it is worth mentioning that it runs at least as fast as the XP tool, but do not care wether a file extension is known to the OS or not. Is that important? YMMV.

Version 1.0

Version 1.0 only searches. You can specify parts of the path to files, parts of the file name, file extensions, file contents, and in what folder to search. Searches can be refined. Each search results in a list of paths to found files. Files cannot be opened from the tool. Download the linguistic version that you prefer and unzip it. That’s all. No installation. It’s just ready to go as it is. Run the file MiOsearch.exe that you find in the folder that is the result of unzipping the zip archive. There is a help text available in the program.

Version 2.0

Version 2.0 can do everything that version 1.0 can. You can also specify replacements to do in the search result. Files can still not be opened from the tool. Download the linguistic version that you prefer and unzip it. That’s all. No installation. Just as version 1.0, it’s just ready to go as it is. Run the file MiOsearch.exe that you find in the folder that is the result of unzipping the zip archive. There is a help text available in the program.

Source code

This is the source code of version 2.0, which – since it is written in Python – demands that you have a Python interpreter available. It has been tested with Python 2.5. Download the linguistic version that you prefer and unzip it. That’s all. No installation. It’s just ready to go as it is. Run the file MiOsearch.pyw that you find in the folder that is the result of unzipping the zip archive. There is a help text available in the program.
